Failure As Feedback

Listen To Today's Episode:

Episode Recap:

In this episode of Learn How To See Better, I challenge the traditional view of failure, reframing it as valuable feedback instead of any kind of personal flaw. I argue once again, that growth and comfort do not coexist, meaning that discomfort and setbacks are essential parts of any journey toward self-improvement. Tune in to learn how to use your failures as fuel, not as a reason to quit.

Key Insights:

Failure is feedback, not a label. Differentiating between "I failed" (an outcome) and "I am a failure" (a self-identity) is a critical mindset shift.

The words "I am" are powerful. What you say after "I am" has a profound impact on your self-perception and what you put into the universe.

A growth mindset is key. Viewing challenges as data-gathering missions, rather than tests of inherent ability, allows you to learn and adapt.

Discomfort signals growth. When you feel uncomfortable, it often means you are in a growth phase, learning and gaining new knowledge or skills.

Comparison is the thief of joy. Don't compare your progress to others; your only competition is yourself.

Best Quote:

"There's a difference between 'I failed' and 'I am a failure'."

Why it is impactful:

This quote is so impactful because it directly addresses a fundamental psychological barrier that stops people from growing. It provides a simple, clear, and powerful distinction between an action and an identity. By reframing failure as a temporary outcome ("I failed") rather than a permanent state of being ("I am a failure"), it frees an individual from the self-imposed prison of negative self-worth. This single shift in perspective is the foundation for a growth mindset, resilience, and the willingness to take risks. It teaches that a setback doesn't define who you are, it only shows you where you are right now.

How to Start Reframing Failure:

Here are 4 enhancements and actionable steps you can apply starting today as part of a Reframe Exercise:

1. Recall a recent failure. Think of a specific time you tried to do something and the outcome wasn't what you hoped for. It could be a failed project, a missed goal, or an awkward conversation.

2. Separate the outcome from yourself. On a piece of paper or in your notes app, draw a line down the middle. On the left side, write down what happened objectively ("The project was rejected," "I couldn't do 20 push-ups"). On the right side, write down the story you told yourself about it ("I'm not good enough," "I'll never be strong").

3. Cross out the negative story. Now, look at the story on the right side. Cross it out completely. It's a limiting belief, not a fact.

4. Replace it with a feedback statement. On the right side, write a new statement. What did the outcome on the left side actually teach you? For example, "The project feedback showed me I need to research my target audience more," or "My body is telling me I need to focus on endurance training."

This simple exercise helps you practice the core idea of the podcast: turning a personal judgment into valuable data.

Final Thoughts:

How you process feedback determines if you stay in the game or quit.

If you see failure as a personal flaw, you'll give up.

If you see it as a chance to learn, you'll stay in it to win it. #MindsetMatters #StayInTheGame
