Growth and Comfort

Listen To Today's Episode:

Episode Recap:

In this episode of Learn How To See Better, we explore the powerful concept that "growth and comfort do not coexist" and why feeling uncomfortable during personal development is actually a sign you're on the right track. We dive into how our internal defense mechanisms and outdated belief systems can create resistance right when we're about to breakthrough, using relatable examples like the chef who dreams of opening a restaurant but gets paralyzed by overthinking future problems that don't yet exist. The key takeaway: learning to recognize when you're fighting what you actually want, and understanding that those growing pains are temporary discomfort in service of permanent transformation. If you're feeling uncomfortable while pursuing growth, that's not a bug... it's a unique feature of the process.

Key Highlights:

💪🏾 Growth and Comfort Do Not Coexist: The core message of the episode is that personal and professional growth requires stepping outside of your comfort zone. Discomfort is a signal that you are making progress and challenging your existing limits.

💪🏾 Growth is a Physical and Mental Process: The analogy of a physical workout is used to illustrate that just as your body gets sore from exercise, your mind and beliefs will feel "uncomfortable" as they are being challenged and expanded.

💪🏾 Old Beliefs Are Like Internal Defense Mechanisms: The episode explains that our minds have a built-in resistance to change, which can manifest as fear or worry about a future problem that doesn't yet exist. This "internal defense mechanism" holds us back from moving forward.

💪🏾 The "Win" is in the Recognition: The key to overcoming this resistance is simply recognizing it. When you feel that hesitation or struggle, it's not a sign to stop, but a signal that you're on the verge of a breakthrough and that old ways of thinking are being challenged.

💪🏾 Stop "Riding the Gas and Brake at the Same Time": The final takeaway is a powerful metaphor for self-sabotage. You can't achieve your desired results if you are simultaneously pushing for growth and holding back with fear. You must be willing to let go of old attachments to pick up new possibilities."

Best Quote:

"Don’t ride the gas and the brake at the same time."

Why it is impactful:

This is the most impactful quote because it provides a simple yet powerful metaphor for the concept of self-sabotage. It visualizes the internal struggle of wanting to grow while simultaneously being held back by fear and old beliefs. The image of a car trying to move forward while the brakes are on perfectly encapsulates the futility and frustration of this conflict. It serves as a clear, memorable call to action, reminding listeners that to move forward, they must fully commit to the path of growth and stop fighting against themselves.

Diving Deeper Into This Episode: Growth and Comfort Do Not Coexist

The most profound quote I've ever encountered about the mindset required for true personal development is this: Growth and comfort do not coexist.

Let me say it again because it's that important: Growth and comfort do not coexist.

This six-word revelation came from the CEO of a company I worked for years ago, and it completely reframed how I approach effort, challenge, and personal transformation. At the time, I was just beginning my own growth journey... barely recognizing the vast untapped potential within me, but understanding that it wouldn't just show up by default. It had to be claimed by design.

Why Growth Feels Uncomfortable

Think about it. Any time in life when you’ve truly grown, it probably didn’t feel easy. For me, I remember being a teenager, pushing myself through tough workouts in the gym. Lifting heavier weights. Running drills until I was exhausted. None of it was comfortable. All of it led to growth. 💪🏾

It’s the same when you’re building a business, strengthening a relationship, or improving yourself. Growth brings discomfort because you’re stepping into new territory.

That unease isn’t a sign you’re on the wrong path. It’s often proof you’re on the right one.

The Battle Between Old Beliefs and New Ones

Here’s where it gets tricky. Our minds are full of old “programs” that run us, based on the beliefs we picked up years ago. Some serve us. Many don’t. 😓

When you step into a new growth phase, those outdated beliefs start to clash with new information. It feels confusing, even frustrating. 😠 You might catch yourself asking:

🤷🏾‍♂️ Why does this feel so hard?

🤷🏾‍♂️ Why do I feel like I’m fighting myself?

That’s because you are. The old you is wrestling with the new you. And breakthroughs only come when you’re willing to let go of what no longer serves you.

Don’t Let Fear of the Unknown Hold You Back

Here’s an example: imagine you’re a great cook, and everyone tells you to open a restaurant. At first, you’re excited. But then the doubts creep in:

What if I can’t handle a packed dining room? 😫

What if I have to open a second location? 😫

What if it all falls apart? 😫

Here’s the truth: those aren’t today’s problems. They’re fears about a future that hasn’t formed yet... fortunately!

Instead of focusing on step 99, focus on step 1. Write the new business plan. Take the first action. Growth happens when you move forward in faith, even when you can’t see the entire staircase.

Recognize Resistance as a Sign of Growth

Your internal defense mechanisms will always try to hold you back. That nervous energy in your chest, that knot in your stomach, that urge to slam the brakes when you should be hitting the gas... that’s not failure!

It’s a sign of growth.

Once you recognize that resistance for what it is, you can stop fighting yourself. Growth feels uncomfortable by design. But discomfort fades as you adapt and rise to a new level.

Final Takeaway

If you’re in growth mode and feeling uncomfortable, remember this:

You’re supposed to feel that way.

Growth and comfort do not coexist. The more you lean into that truth, the more you’ll be able to keep leveling up and becoming the best version of yourself.

Keep growing. Keep learning how to see better.
